It's Like Coaching Richmond PDF Print E-mail

You know sometimes I feel like being a super coach must be a lot like supporting Richmond. Every new pre season brings with it unbridled optimism as your carefully sculpted side tears it up on the training track, and you just can’t wait for the real stuff to begin so you can start dominating. Alas, as Richmond learned all too well, the best laid plans can unravel alarmingly quickly, as I’m sure most supercoachers would agree. Only two hours into season 2009 and Richmond’s finals aspirations are dealt a mortal blow from which they don’t look like recovering, while if you were unfortunate enough to have Raines, Anthony or Cousins in your team you didn’t fare much better. If you thought the worst was over, you were sorely mistaken.

Is it just me or do supercoach- worthy players seem to suffer more injuries then the spuds of the fantasy world? There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing gun players like Ablett and Hodge playing sore and missing weeks with niggles while Leigh Brown pulls up every Monday morning fresh and raring to go again. Maybe it’s just a psychological thing and you only notice the outs that affect you, just like how some team supporters think that their side is the only one hit with injuries. But even so, only 7 rounds in and the list of fantasy relevant players who’ve missed weeks is staggering.

Even more annoying is that this year was meant to be different, this year you were going to learn from your previous mistakes. No more picking injury prone hacks like Drummond and Chappy this year, oh no, no this year you went with the ever reliable Boomer and Kane Cornes, those guys never miss weeks!

So being the supercoach tragic that you are, with round eight coming up chances are you’re down to single figure trades and about five 0’s on the field this week. My considered and reasoned advice would be to give up on chasing overall glory and focus on bragging rights in the league. Cop a few zeroes the next few weeks while nursing players back to health, and a league loss or two in the hopes of scraping into finals and doing some damage when everyone ELSE has run out of trades.

After all, nearly every league has at least a few no hopers that are a push over even if you’re only putting 18 guys on the park. They’re a guaranteed four points and a step closer to finals. You know the teams I’m talking about: They’re only mildly into fantasy footy anyway and only joined up because you didn’t want any randoms in your league. Chances are they hit the auto complete button at the start of the year and forgot about it five minutes later. Four dead giveaways of such a side are:
1 – It has players worth over 300 grand on the pine from round 1, or even worse
2 – It has no-name rookies in every bench position because ‘they don’t play anyway and I needed to save money for elsewhere’
3 – It contains about thirteen players from the team they support
4 - Kepler Bradley is in the team

But of course this is the addicts and tragics section so I don’t expect anyone to heed sound advice. So how to get out of this hole you’ve dug yourself by making countless knee jerk trades? You trade your way out that’s how! After all you are due some luck, and I bet you’ll make it through the rest of the year without needing to use any more trades on season ending injuries. So goodbye Hodge, Ablett and Higgins (groin injuries are suss and can’t end up having three more Judds circa 2007 on our hands can we), hello Sidebottom, Yarran and Broughton. Their spots are guaranteed for the rest of the year surely, and its time to get Reiwoldt Davis and Dal Santo before they get too expensive.

So best of luck, and remember, its never too early to give up and start penciling in your 2010 starting lineup.

Oh and if you happen to be a supercoach AND tiger tragic, then God help you.
